AUSTIN, Texas–The Texas High School Mountain Bike League, a NICA Project League (www.nationalmtb.org), is holding its first annual Leaders’ Summit on October 22-23, 2011 at the Reveille Peak Ranch (www.rprtexas.com) in Burnet, Texas.

Vance McMurry, the founding chair of the Texas League, said “This Leaders’ Summit is the cornerstone to the Texas League’s inaugural season. Attendees will learn from the legends in high school mountain biking from California and Colorado. As newly qualified coaches they will walk away with the essential tools to lead their student athletes.”

brings together coaches, assistant coaches, ride leaders, and parent volunteers – both new and experienced – to develop skills, knowledge, share strategies, and build community.

The Texas League is guided by the vision to enable every Texas teen to strengthen their body, mind and character through participating in competitive cross-country mountain biking.

The two-day summit is a training weekend that forms the education backbone of League leaders. It promotes a holistic approach to coaching and builds the foundation of the League’s youth development activities which create an environment where young people can grow and thrive.

The sessions will be taught by Austin McInery, NICA Educational Director and Matt Gunnell, SoCal League Director, and the skills clinics will be led by veteran high school cycling trainer and author Lee McCormack (www.leelikesbikes.com).

Day One of the summit presents a series of seminars on ensuring successful management and leadership of a high school mountain bike team. Topics covered include: culturally competent coaching, engaging and motivating adolescents and their parents, securing and sustaining sponsorships and support from school administrators, managing the inherent risk associated with cycling, and facilitating an inclusive, supportive team culture for both genders.

On the second day, participants spend several hours with Lee McCormack learning how to teach mountain bike skills ranging from basic to advanced. Subjects covered include: teaching techniques, accommodating different learning styles and abilities, and creating positive learning environments.

Vance McMurry said, “This is a great opportunity to spend a weekend in the company of peers and energize for the upcoming season. Participants will learn about the Texas League, how to start a mountain bike team, how to work with their schools, issues related to liability, and the intricacies of working with high school cyclists.”

Since then he co-founded Biking in Dallas, has gone through countless Craigslist bike projects (some better than others) and can be found pedaling around town on a Electra Ticino with a camera in tow.
