Sunday (09-12-2010) Dallas Morning News: Dallas Bike Plan Update
If you didn’t see Jason Roberts, his wife and his daughter tooling along on their bicyles with Big D in the background on the cover of the Sunday Dallas Morning News, well, check it out and read about it here.
Remarkable things have happened in the Dallas bicycling community since 2007 when I bought my Electrabike and started looking for places to ride and people to ride with…..it seemed like a lonely town to ride in then. I’ll never forget going to Dealey Plaza with Chris Curnutt for my first Bike Friendly Oak Cliff ride in 2008 and wondering if anyone would show up. Show up they did, and I give Jason Roberts a lot of the credit for getting people together and pointing them in the right direction. He’s a machine! A human velocipede, I would argue.
There is a real sense of community among Dallas bicyclists now, and I’m talking about regular folks like me. We know that there are others out there, and we’re making our voices heard at City Council meetings. And, amazingly, things are changing in this car-oriented town.
Biking in Dallas is changing, and it’s exciting to me to be a part of it.
I had to have an image for the story, so here it is:
This is my 1973 Schwinn World Voyageur. I took it to my friend Justin Husman’s house on Saturday and he showed me how to replace the tires, tubes and cables on this lovely old bike. Justin is a good example of one of the very nice people that I have met since I started riding a bicycle again as an adult. What fun! It’s Justin’s birthday on October 1, and we’re going to the Great State Fair of Texas (see the related article on this site). See you then!
