Bike Lane on Custer Road in Richardson, Texas

Bike Friendly Richardson hosted their second group ride last Sunday.  I missed their inaugural ride so I was pleased to make this one. Hubbard and I both has business to attend to at Richardson Bike Mart, the meeting location for the ride,  so we went early to get some bike work done that we’ve both been meaning to do.  When we caught up with the BFR gang I was impressed with their set-up.  Coffee, donuts, bike magazines, stickers, assorted stuff and best of all, a printed, color route map.   The map was based on an exceptional Google map Richard had made just for the event.  You can see that here.

I live a few blocks west of the Richardson city limits and I ride on the west side of 75 often in the summer, so I’m familiar with much of the area.  I was not familiar with anything east of 75 so when Richard said we were headed that was I was stoked.

We started east on the University Trail and then went north to the Renner Trail which took us to 75.  I’ve ridden that trail a hundred times but I’ve never gone on the other side of 75 and we did just that.  Holy cow I am impressed with what the City of Richardson has done.  From the east side of 75 we went south on what I think is called the Central Trail, through the edge of the Spring Creek Nature Area, then through the Galatyn Woodland Preserve.  Those two places would be a perfect place for the whole family, I’ll be going back with my kids soon.  We stopped at the Plaza At Galatyn Park, which is home to the DART Galatyn Park rail station.  Then it was back on the trail.  On the way back Hubbard and I took the sidewalk along Campbell road and took a few photos of the bike lane at Custer Road.

Once again these overcast days in February rob photos of any color, so most of them look gray.  We rode through some gorgeous areas that I didn’t get a chance to photograph as much as I would have liked,  and the photos I did manage to take lack color.  Damn.  Hopefully we’ll see some sunshine soon and the quality of pictures will pick up.

Anyhow, the ride was enjoyable, the route was great and the people were fun.  It was also cool seeing Raul and Michael from Pedallas.com again.  I’m hoping to join more BFR rides this spring and summer.  And be sure to check out the BFR update with photos of their own here.
