Biking in Dallas

State Fair of Texas Group Ride

Friday October 1st

This is an invitation to anyone in the North Texas area that loves both bicycle commuting and the Great State Fair of Texas: we’re going to ride our bikes to the State Fair of  Texas this year. We’re doing it on Friday, October 1, 2010. That day happens to be the birthdate of Mr. Justin Husman, a contributor to this site and avid bike commuter. So we’ll be buying that young man a Fletcher’s Corny Dog for sure!

Here is the plan so far: I’m going to meet Justin at the Mockingbird DART station at approximately 10:00 a.m. on that Friday, October 1, 2010. We will be on our bicycles. I’ll be coming from East Dallas on the train from the White Rock Station, he’ll be rocking in from points north. We will proceed from the Mockingbird Station across Highway 75/Central Expy. to the northern end of the Katy Trail. We will proceed southbound on the lovely Katy Trail to downtown Big D. We will coordinate our ride as best we can with folks that want to come in from Cowtown on the TRE, and I will post more precise times as I review their schedule. We will take a break in Dealey Plaza, which is only several blocks north from the Union Station end of the TRE line so that folks can join us there.

We will then head down to the Exposition Park area and either have a drink with the good folks at the Amsterdam Coffee House and Lounge (Hello, Sheldon Hubbard!) or the Meridian Room (greetings, Mr. Bricker!). Then on to the Fair!

AC Hell

From their site:

AC Hell is coming up October 7-8 starting in Dallas, Texas. Single-speed and fixed gear riders will attempt to ride over 240 miles in just 2 days to get to the best cycling city in Dallas – not to mention, one hell of a concert.

Oct 14-17th

From the BFOC site –

Cyclesomatic is back! This year we’re packing all of the bike love into four days including another Dallas Bikes to City Hall event, Lee Harvey Oswald historic themed group ride, Kiddical Mass, Bicycle Block Party, a 75208 Group ride to the feature film “Pedal” at the Texas Theatre,’s Photo Scavenger Hunt Polaride, a Fort Worth to Dallas ride, a Block Party in Bishop Arts (w/Beer, BBQ, Bands, Gold Sprints, et al), and More! See their website for more details.

Bike to City Hall:

October 15th, the City of Dallas Promotes Dallas Bikes to City Hall. Arriving at 8:30AM and Viewing of Dallas Bike Plan Draft

The city of Dallas, in cooperation with DART, the City Parks Department, and Bike Friendly Oak Cliff invites all to bicycle to City Hall to promote greater bicycle awareness on the morning of October 15th, 2010. Several Council Members have signed on to ride meeing at Union Station at 8:10AM and and riding together to City Hall at 8:30AM on bicycles that we’ll provide. Several BF groups are coordinating their rides and will provide details on meeting points for anyone interested in riding as a group. We’ll arrive at the Plaza at 8:30AM, and Council Members will present the Dallas Bike Plan draft which spotlights the future citywide Complete Streets initiatives.

The Facebook Event page for Dallas Bikes to City Hall is here. Check back for updates on meetup locations throughout the city for those who would like to ride as a group.

On the Trail of Lee Harvey Oswald

October 17th

From the Bike Friendly Oak Cliff site:

Join BFOC for a group bicycle ride on Sunday, October 17th, at 2:30PM starting at Dealey Plaza in Downtown Dallas, and passing the infamous residences of JFK’s alleged assassin. This was the group ride that launched BFOC in 2008, and is one of our favorites. Our ride will take us over the 1912 Houston Street Viaduct, crossing into North Oak Cliff, and stopping at pivotal spots from that fateful day in 1963. We’ll end up our ride passing through the Bishop Arts District, stopping for drinks at Eno’s.

This ride will be weather permitting so check back for updates. Highlights of the trip will include:

– Meeting in front of the Sixth Floor Museum
– Riding over the 1912 Houston Street Viaduct
– stopping at 1026 N. Beckley, last residence of Lee Harvey Oswald
– Following LHO’s escape route to the site where JD. Tippit was shot
– Visit the Texas Theatre, site of LHO’s capture
– Ride through the Bishop Arts District and stop at Eno’s Tavern
– stopping at 214 W. Neely, site of infamous Oswald “Backyard Photos”
