GM Jumps The Shark Then Giant Bicycles Puts Them In Head Lock
GM, as in General Motors, jumped the shark when they started a “Reality Sucks” campaign that belittles cyclists. Just look at this idiotic ad:
Oh look, the guy on a bike is consumed with shame as the pretty girl looks down on his dorky ten speed from the comfort of her GM gas burner. She looks like she’s laughing at our hero on two wheels, “stop pedaling and start driving” is the message. We’re left to assume if you buy a GM car that pretty girl will stop laughing at you and possibly ask for a ride home from the student center.
Let’s just say I have my doubts.
And sometimes reality does suck, GM, by now you’ve seen the ad our friends at Giant Bicycles volleyed back in your direction:
Needless to say the Twitter universe heated up which has left GM offering ongoing apologies:
The moral to this story? Being stupid is not something to brag about so when the product you sell makes the world more toxic you’d be wise to avoid ridiculing products that make the world a better place to live.
I hope that every bicycle manufacturer in north America launches a similar “Reality Does Suck” campaign. If anything deserves to go viral, it’s this.
