Garage Sale Find: Opaque Blue 1973 Schwinn Suburban
One thing that I really love about my obsessive/compulsive bicycling hobby is: The Hunt.
Whether it be Craigslist, Ebay, garage sales, flea markets, unsanitary looking thrift stores or those metal-recycling guys from south Dallas that drive around in crazy-ass looking pickup trucks full of scrap metal. I take my vintage bicycles where I find them. I have always enjoyed poking around in old bookstores, antique malls, esate sales, the city dump, you name it. If Antiques Road Show was on 24 hours a day, I’d watch it like some folks watch CNN.
So: today I was driving from my Lakewood office to my Casa Linda/White Rock Lake area home for lunch. About a block from my house, I saw three bikes at a garage sale. I recognized one of them as a Schwinn from a distance. ……………………had I stumbled upon the East Dallas equivalent of King Tut’s Tomb?
Well, no, of course not. But I bought this very nice April 1973 Schwinn Suburban 5 speed for $15.00! How about that lovely color? The frame size is 20 inches, and so it’s really a bit small for me. There are so many good parts on this bike, it’s tempting for a Schwinn dork like me to strip the bike for parts. But I’ll probably clean it up a bit, ride it around, and then list it on Craigslist and try to get this lovely bike back into action: resue, and profit.
And, yes, I know that I need to rake my leaves.
