Cottonwood Trail Esplanade Dedication June 3rd
Construction for the Cottonwood trail is scheduled to be finished in May. So Thursday, June 3rd, at 10am they are having a dedication ceremony at the Esplanade, which is an amazing piece of work by itself.
From the organizers:
Mark your calendar to join us for the dedication of the beautiful esplanade for the Cottonwood Creek Trail. Park your car at Hamilton Park’s Willie B. Johnson Recreation Center (map) and walk down to join us down at the esplanade as we celebrate the completion of this beautiful connection spot for the Cottonwood Trail. We will have a short dedication ceremony to thank those who helped make this possible and share in some light refreshments.
We’re going to ride the trail to get to the ceremony! Even though the event is on a Thursday, we’ll be riding bikes to the event. We’ll probably meet at the Spring Valley – Maham road entrance. I’ll post those details a couple of weeks prior to the dedication. There is also a DART station nearby so we’ll publish those details too.
There should be a good showing of city (Dallas and Richardson) and county officials and staff at this event, not to mention the many companies like TI who helped fund it will have representatives there too. It’s a less than ideal day but hopefully we can get a good showing of cyclists there. Please pass the word to everyone you know who rides a bike.

In the meantime, enjoy this very cool Cottonwood trail video of the ride up under the High-5 shot by a DORBA member who goes by LVS. In the video he’s traveling east, up under Central from Maham road, and then south, under LBJ. The trail will join the White Rock Creek trail to the south, and the Preston Ridge trail to the north. So the video demonstrates what the ride from Preston Ridge to the White Rock Creek would be like.

Great Video. This is a great connection . . . more like these on the drawing board.
It sure looks better than the first time we rode through there, Chris!
I’m looking forward to the June 3 dedication. Be there!

This is a dedication only for the plaza/esplanade, not the Cottonwood Trail. The trail is not officially open, and won’t be until the southern section from Hamilton Park to WRC trail is completed.
However, the section between Mahan Drive and Hamilton Park is completed and ride-able. However it will not be maintained, so watch out for broken glass and gravel/dirt that has washed onto the trail.
Marc thanks for the clarification and I’m betting you’ll be there. See you then.

When is the southern section connection to the WRTrail scheduled to be opened? I rode up from WR Lake Sat morning to ride the trail but could not find the connector. I didn’t realize that piece was not finished. I asked a police officer where the trail was and she had never even heard of it. I rode all over that area looking for it. I was on TI Blvd, north of Forest, so I was close. Looks like I should have turned into Hamilton Park and connected there and I would have been good.
I’ll know next time. It will be nice when it’s all open. Riding on the MUT’s is very relaxing. I’m looking forward to being able to go from Richardson to Deep Ellum all on the MUT.
Jason, I have no idea when that section will be completed. Back in April I read in the DMN that the entire trail was scheduled to be finished by the end of May. Oh well. When you’re in Hamilton park you can see where the trail will go under Forest, and they are indeed working on it. I cannot wait for it to be finished!
