Breaking News: White Rock Lake Levee Construction
On my bike commute to my office on Thursday, March 11, 2010, I was quite surprised as I rode through the bike trail/levee reconstruction at White Rock Lake.
A flagman waved me into a newly opened section of the trail!
Sweet, huh? Here it is in the other direction:
They have been rebuilding this trail and levee area for eighteen months, and it has been closed for three years since the huge rainstorm that did so much damage down here. Thursday was their first day to reopen the trail. See the nice overlook? It’s one of several.
A waterfall in Big D? Check.
And no, this isn’t that Pearl Beer billboard on I-35.
While I was taking pictures, the foreman of the whole job site came over to talk to me. He didn’t want me to take his picture (“I’m allergic to pictures”), but I did it anyway after he was walking away.
He was very nice, and clearly proud (rightfully so) of the work that had been done. He told me that the whole job would be completed and the new trail and improvements would be open in a few weeks. He said that it would have been finished weeks ago, but that all of the rain had delayed everything. I’ll bet!
This will be the new parking lot behind the spillway on Winsted Drive:
How nice! This was always a borderline creepy dirt parking lot for as long as I can remember.
I’m excited! I use this trail all the time, and it will be lovely when it’s completely re-opened, just in time for spring.
After my long (for me) commute downtown and back (24 miles!), I took this photo from Winfrey Point when I was about three miles from home:
Big D, little A, double L, A, S.
