Bike Friendly Politic, or Not

Submitted by on September 4, 2011 – 1:27 pm3 Comments

So I’m obsessed with the 2012 presidential election, I admit it. I cannot recall a more bizarre era in presidential politics since I’ve been alive.  So with that in mind I’ve come across a few photos of current politics on two wheels.

Barack Obama

Jon Huntsman

Huntsman on another kind of bike

Ron Paul (the other Texan)

Rick Perry

You remember George Bush, don’t you?

A younger Mitt Romney

I searched for photos of all of the current hopefuls but what you see is all I could find. I don’t see the subject of cycling being discussed at the upcoming republican debates, but it’s still interesting to see who rides a bicycle.

And for those who find politics boring, here’s a shot of Katy Perry on what appears to be a Trek (hat tip Cyclelicio.us)

As you were…

If you refer to the top photo as THE Obama bike shot. Perry is the only one with a helmet on. Does that mean he’s the only one with brains to protect or that he’s worried about losing the last few bits? OTOH, if you use the helmeted Obama, does that imply that Perry and Obama are like peas in a pod or that they’ll have similar approaches towards Congress? OTOH, Ron Paul is far and away the most dedicated cyclist of current candidates. Interesting photo collection, regardless of the various potentially bizarre implications we could jump to. And you will note that I didn’t make any implications at all about Obama riding on a sidewalk with a helmet on; a dangerous act unless you have the secret service to run interference with any motorists that might cross your path while you cross the street.

I am not reading much of anything into any of these photos, other than noting some of these guys ride a bike. I am, in fact, scrutinizing everything else they do. – Chris

On the contrary, it means he does’t understand statistics very well, and just relies in common mis-perceptions about purported risks of cycling and safety benefits of putting foam on your head. Congratulations to the rest.
