Judge Roy Bean at the Jersey Lilly Saloon in Langtry, Texas

In this early photo of bicycling in Texas, a white-bearded Judge Roy Bean stands outside of his famed Jersey Lilly Saloon in Langtry, TX, flanked by two new-fangled bicycles. This image was recorded sometime prior to 1897.

Men like this wouldn’t give a second thought to riding down the Santa Fe Trail in old East Dallas….day or night.

But then, if I had a Henry rifle, two .40 caliber repeating pistols and a Bowie knife, I wouldn’t worry much about it, either.
